Book a free portfolio coaching session.
These 55-minute sessions let you practice your UX design portfolio presentation and get feedback so you can put your best foot forward during interviews. Whether you want another round of polish on a solid talk or you’re seeking your first UX role, I would love to hear your story.
Who is a fit for this?
You should be an aspiring or experienced UX designer.
If you would like feedback on a portfolio of visual design, content design, or any other kind of creative work, you really want to find someone else.
Also:
You have a portfolio presentation ready to practice—anywhere from rough to polished.
You are excited for and open to respectful feedback.
You want to grow your presentation skills.
I prioritize folx with less systemic support.
If you identify as a cis white male, please only book a session if it’s available in the next 7 days. If that policy feels unfair to you, we are probably not going to be a good fit anyway.
What should you expect?
When you book your session, I’ll send you a short online form so we can spend our time on you instead of teaching me.
When it’s time for our call, bring a presentation with at least 25 minutes of material. It can be rough and unpracticed, but it cannot be clicking or scrolling through your online portfolio.
During the call, our time will look something like this:
We will talk for a few minutes so you can connect with your audience (me!) and I can answer truly burning questions.
You’ll present the first 25–35 minutes of your portfolio.
I’ll share my reflections on your talk, both strengths and opportunities, for 10–15 minutes.
The final minutes are less structured—a chance for open discussion, rerunning part of your talk, or even ending early if that’s what calls to you.
With your consent, I will record our session and send you a link so you can review it later. This will let you see yourself as a presenter (even if it feels painful, I promise it helps!) and replay our discussion at your discretion.
“Jeff is incredibly skilled at portfolio reviews. He helped me hone my presentation and his feedback was concise, actionable and correct. I was able to get to a tighter, clearer story that let my work shine.”
Why am I doing this?
I want to see more diverse leadership in design.
I can help make this happen by teaching more people how to describe their work and find a fit in the next team that needs them.
I do not have any services, content, newsletters, or affiliate links to sell you or anyone else. This is simply my time offered freely.
Why work with me?
I am an expert design communicator and presenter.
I’ve taught thousands of people about cognitive psychology, perceptual psychology, and design. I’m comfortable in rooms of all sizes and have specific tools for video calls, conference rooms, and large halls. I’ve also taught presentation skills to UX designers at the School of Visual Concepts.
I’m an experienced designer and hiring manager.
I was head of design at Tableau for 7 years, where I built a diverse team of 40. I was at Microsoft for 13 years. I hired teams at two successful startups and my design-build agency. In all, I’ve been interviewing people for over 30 years and making hiring decisions for 10. Along the way, I’ve reviewed countless portfolios online and probably seen a couple hundred portfolio presentations.
“Jeff helped me develop a skeleton of a story I was not proud to show into a presentation that I was genuinely excited to share. He quickly understood what I was trying to showcase and made suggestions so I stopped underselling myself and my experience. His feedback helped me get past a lot of imposter syndrome and put my best foot forward in interviews.”
